As Reinders (2011) reports, the misuse of the ecological assets is on the motivation of the advanced inn industry: Accord ing to an ongoing EnergyStar report, lodgings in the U.S. spend near $4 billion on vitality every year. Given that vitality costs will just keep on expanding, diminishing vitality consumptions has become a feasible method to lessen generally speaking costs. (Reinders, 2011). Henceforth, there can be no conceivable uncertainty that something is to be done to unravel the given unpredictability. As indicated by the consequences of the occasion, certain measures are to and can be attempted. Since the given issue is an impossible to miss investigation of inn the board and can be viewed as an ideal case of the manner in which the ecological issues meddle the field of business, I picked the worry for the earth in the circle of lodging industry. Basic Analysis of the Events According to the consequences of the occasion, two potential methods for taking care of the rising issue have been advertised. As Reinders clarified, these are â€Å"1) taking part sought after reaction measures to dimi nish the expense of power; 2) expanding vitality proficiency to lessen vitality usage† (Reinders 2011). From one perspective, the given strategies appear to be fairly effective and might demonstrate working. Then again, the given methods can likewise have woeful outcomes on the lodging industry and on the customers’ enthusiasm for the companies’ offers, also the condition of the common vitality. In this way, as per what National Grid (2004) says, such measures as constraining the temperature of clothing high temp water to 120â ° Fahrenheit and covering hot tubs and pools nightfall (p. 1) may have their impact on the condition of the hotels’ issues, yet saving money on the administrations isn't the exit plan; clearly lodging directors need certain procedure for the inns not to squander the regular energy.Advertising Looking for report on business financial matters? As the examination states, the given measure will serve impeccably well both for lodgings and for nature. Moreover, as indicated by specific sources, different answers for the given circumstances have been made effectively. As Energy Star (2007) claims, with the assistance of establishment of glaring lights, inn Marriott â€Å"was ready to spare nearly $6 million and diminish its ozone depleting substance outflows by 70,000 tons† (p. 1), which is preferably amazing and shockingly less requesting over decreasing the nature of the offices, as Reinders (2011) recommends. Along these lines, it can't be questioned that the way to tackle the given iss ue stretch a long ways past the limits set by the choice of Reinders (2011). Henceforth, the neighborliness business should endure significant misfortunes which the exchange to the vitality sparing methodology will undoubtedly trigger, and can build up a particular strategies that will even add to the advancement of the lodging business, simultaneously improving the current ecological state. Request reaction programs permit members to receive the rewards of diminished vitality costs while likewise disposing of the requirement for the development of new force plants, while expanded vitality productivity decreases a property’s carbon footprintâ€and service bill. (Reinders 2011) Nevertheless, the given arrangement doesn't appear to be sufficiently satisfactory. Despite the fact that the endeavors that should be embraced will have their impact on the security of the earth, the working of the lodgings will undoubtedly deviate, which will prompt the emergency in the friendliness industry.Advertising We will compose a custom report test on Reducing the Energy Costs in Hotels: An Attempt to Take Care of the Environment explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More According to the outcomes gave by STR (2008), the proportion to deals of the lodgings decreased in 2006-2008 from 32,40% to 23,30%, the vitality squander making somewhere in the range of 3% and 6% of complete running cost (Hose, n.d.), which is an immediate verification of the way that the offered framework demonstrates not as proficient as it ought to have been. As Bardi (2010) clarifies, various factors separated from the incomes of the organization are to be considered before depending on the adjustment in the organization approach, which the Hubbart equation predetermines: â€Å"The Hubbart recipe thinks about such factors as working costs, wanted quantifiable profit, and salary from different offices in the inn to set up room rates† (209). Henceforth, it must be recognized that the flexibility of the components that have their effect in the given circumstance thwarts the arrangement of the complex ities. Relating the offered circumstance to the WHO occasion (WHO, 2011), one should check that the association supports of the measures that are planned for safeguarding the earth and forestalling characteristic sources structure debilitating, which is the reason the course of activities attempted by Reinders doesn't appear to be sufficient. The Challenges, the Limitations advertisement the Solutions for the Problems Because of the assortment of components that the given issue is subject to, there can be a few answers for the circumstance, specifically, the one that worries the wellbeing of nature and the prosperity of the inn proprietors, just as the neighborliness business by and large. Henceforth, the issue can be considered from a few perspectives, as it has been portrayed above, yet clearly has a few impediments that don't permit to attempt the full course of activities to wipe out the clashing issues. As Gã ¶ssling (2011) clarifies, the answers for the issue of vitality squa ndering can be illuminated with the recommended methods for high innovation advancements effectively just in the nations where science is advancing, while in creating nations the usage of these thoughts appears to be dangerous: For instance, Deng and Burnett (2000) found that power accounted fro 73 percent of the general vitality use in lodgings in Hong Kong. Comparative qualities were found in New Zealand, where the principle vitality hotspot for convenience foundations is power (75 percent of all out vitality use), while coal is 12 percent. (p. 76) Hence, it can't be denied that the improvement restrictions forestall the vitality sparing tasks. Along these lines, explicit estimates must be offered for the creating countries.Advertising Searching for report on business financial aspects? We should check whether we can support you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Find out More In any case, as Howlett (2009) claims, the power utilization recipe, TE = FE + VE*X (TE = all out power, FE = fixed power, VE = variable power, X = complete number of rooms) (344) despite everything confines the potential outcomes that vitality sparing strategies open. By the by, the open doors referenced above are fairly great, beginning from sunlight based capacity to the alleged turn frameworks (Flex Your Power, 2006). All in all, one must stamp that the issue right now looked by the antagonistic vibe business is very basic and difficult to comprehend. Be that as it may, adopting the effective strategy and following the suggestions of the researchers, the proprietors of the lodging offices are probably going to keep their incomes high and simultaneously add to the salvation of nature. In this way, to understand the given issue, the unequivocal measures are to be attempted, which will prompt the wellbeing of nature and the accomplishment of the threatening vibe business. Talking ab out the manner in which the given issue influences my own future in the business, I might want to take note of that the given issue is fascinating for me, since the difference in the wellspring of intensity flexibly, which the given issue surmises, will undoubtedly reevaluate people’s impression of what the universe of innovation is. In addition, there is no uncertainty that with the assistance of the elective force source, the expenses for provisions are going to change, which implies that administration is going to take a significant diverse shape. Asian Americans in Ivy Admission

Asian Americans in Ivy Admission May 27 Harvard may have been singled out for discriminating against Asian Americans, but Harvard is not alone in this practice (photo credit: Chensiyuan). Have we written enough about Asian Americans in Ivy League admissions of late? No way. Weve got lots to say. Deal with it. There is a piece up on NPR entitled Behind The Curtain Of College Admissions, Fairness May Not Be Priority No. 1 that we figured wed discuss on the pages of our college admissions blog. First of all, who suggested that the top priority of the highly selective college admissions process was to be fair? Certainly not us. It all depends on what the measure of fairness is. There are students who get perfect grades and perfect SAT scores who are denied admission to Ivy League and other highly selective colleges because they present as arrogant in their college admissions essays. Or they present as boring in alumni interviews. Or maybe a  teacher conveys something in a letter of recommendation that scares off admissions officers. We dont consider it unfair that this student wouldnt gain admission. We wouldnt root for this applicant either. Wed root for the applicant who may not have perfect grades and perfect scores but presents as likable, as modest, as engaging and intellectually curious. And we consider that fair (as do the highly selective colleges across America, we might add). This segment on NPR focuses on the hot-button issue in the news right now allegations that Harvard discriminates against Asian American applicants. Its an issue weve been writing about extensively this week in the hope of drawing attention to the plight of these applicants. But allow us to disagree with something said early on in this piece. As quoted on NPR, Jim Jump, a former president of  National Association of College Admissions Counseling, sat down with NPRs Arun Rath to discuss the current admissions landscape — and whether Asian-Americans are being held to a higher standard. I havent necessarily seen that, he tells Rath. I think in general what I see is that, with any talent or quality, the more of it that there is, the less valuable it becomes in the admissions process — where the rarer something is, the more valuable it is.  Jump adds: Thats what I see — is that uniqueness is kind of the hidden currency of college admissions.' Uh huh. Read between those lines. And read between them once more. When so many Asian American applicants submit perfect or near-perfect grades and test scores, those perfect or near-perfect grades and test scores become inherently less valuable. While we absolutely agree that uniqueness is kind of the hidden currency of college admissions (and we absolutely love that line, Jim!), wed like to draw your attention to the fact that many admissions officers dont even know theyre discriminating against Asian Americans (and Asians). They dont even know theyre stereotyping them. But they are. And this quote by Jim Jump, a former president of an organization the Founder of Ivy Coach is a member of (NACAC), while well intended, speaks to this unintentional but genuine discrimination against an entire group of people.

All About Summer Homeschooling

If your children are currently in public or private school, but youre thinking of homeschooling,  you may think that summer is the perfect time to test the homeschooling waters. But is it a good idea totry out homeschooling during your childs summer break? Learn about the pros and cons to a summer homeschool trial, along with some tips for setting up a successful trial run.   Pros for Trying Homeschooling During the Summer Many kids thrive on routine. Many children function best with  a predictable schedule. Moving right into a school-like routine may be ideal for your family and result in a more peaceful, productive summer break for everyone. You may also enjoy year-round homeschooling. A six weeks on/one week off schedule  allows for regular breaks throughout the year and longer breaks as needed. A four-day week is another year-round homeschool schedule that may provide just enough structure for the summer months. Finally, consider doing formal studies only two or three mornings each week during the summer, leaving afternoons and a few full days open for social activities or free time. It gives struggling learners a chance to catch up. If you have a student who is struggling academically, the summer months may be an excellent time to strengthen weak areas and see what you think of homeschooling at the same time. Don’t focus on the trouble spots with a classroom mindset. Instead, practice skills actively and creatively. For example, you might recite times tables while bouncing on the trampoline, jumping rope, or playing hopscotch. You can also use the summer months to try an entirely different approach to areas of struggle. My oldest had difficulty with reading in first grade. Her school used a whole word approach. When we began homeschooling, I chose a phonics program that taught reading skills in a systematic way with lots of games. It was just what she needed. It gives advanced learners an opportunity to dig deeper. If you have a gifted learner, you may find that your student isn’t challenged by the pace at his school or is frustrated at only skimming the surface of concepts and ideas. Schooling during the summer provides the opportunity to dig deeper into the topics that intrigue him. Perhaps he’s a Civil War buff who wants to learn more than names and dates. Maybe he is fascinated by science and would love to spend the summer conducting experiments. Families can take advantage of summer learning opportunities. There are  many fantastic learning opportunities during the summer. Not only are they educational, but they can provide insight into your childs talents and interests. Consider options such as: Day camps—art, drama, music, gymnasticsClasses—cooking, driver’s education, writingVolunteer opportunities—zoos, aquariums, museums Check with community colleges, businesses, libraries, and museums for opportunities. A history museum on a college campus in our area  offers summer classes for teens. You may also want to check your favorite social media outlets for local homeschool groups. Many offer summer classes or activities, providing you with educational opportunities and a chance to get to know other homeschooling families. Some public and private schools send children home with a summer bridge program that includes reading and activity assignments. If your childs school does, you can incorporate those into your homeschooling trial. Cons to Summer Homeschooling Kids may resent losing their summer break. Children learn early to embrace summer break with excitement. Jumping into full-fledged academics when your kids know that their friends are enjoying a more relaxed schedule could leave them feeling resentful. They may project that feeling onto you or onto homeschooling in general. Transitioning from public school to homeschool can be tricky anyway. You don’t want to start off with unnecessary negativity. Some students need time to reach developmental readiness. If you’re thinking about homeschooling because your child is struggling academically, consider the fact that he  may not be developmentally ready for that particular skill. Focusing on the concepts your child finds challenging may seem like a good idea, but doing so can prove counterproductive. Many times parents notice a marked improvement in a particular skill or understanding of a concept after children have taken a break from it for a few weeks or even a few months. Let your child use the summer months  to focus on his areas of strength. Doing so can provide a much-need boost of confidence without sending the message that hes not as smart as his peers. It can leave students feeling burnt out. Giving home education a try with a heavy focus on formal learning and seatwork will likely leave your child feeling burnt out and frustrated if you decide to continue with public or private school in the fall. Instead, read lots of great books and look for hands-on learning opportunities. You can also use those summer bridge activities. That way, your child is still learning and youre giving home educating a try, but your child can return to school refreshed and ready for the new year if you decide not to homeschool after all. A sense of commitment may be missing. One problem I’ve seen with a summer homeschooling trial run is a lack of commitment. Because parents know that they’re just trying homeschooling, they don’t work with their children consistently during the summer months. Then, when it’s time for school in the fall, they decide not to homeschool because they don’t think they can do it. It’s much different when you know that you’re responsible for your child’s education. Dont base your overall commitment to homeschooling on a summer trial. It doesn’t allow time to deschool. Deschooling is a foreign word to most people outside of the homeschooling community. It refers to allowing children a chance to let go of any negative feelings associated with learning and rediscover their natural sense of curiosity. During the deschooling period, textbooks and assignments are put aside allowing kids (and their parents) to rediscover the fact that learning happens all time time. It isnt constrained by school walls or blocked off into neatly-labeled subject headings. Instead of focusing on formal learning during summer break, leave that time for deschooling. Thats sometimes easier to do over the summer without stressing and worrying that your student is falling behind because you don’t see formal learning happening. Tips for Making a Summer Homeschool Test Run Successful If you choose to use the summer break to see if homeschooling might be a good fit for your family, there are some steps you can take to make it a more successful trial. Don’t recreate a classroom. First, don’t try to recreate a traditional classroom. You don’t need textbooks for summer homeschooling. Get outside. Explore nature, learn about your city, and visit the library. Play games together. Work puzzles. Travel and learn about the places you visit by exploring while youre there. Create a learning-rich environment. Kids are naturally curious. You may be surprised at how much they learn with little direct input from you if you’re intentional about creating a learning-rich environment. Make sure that books, art and craft supplies, and open-ended play items are easily accessible.   Allow kids to explore their interests. Use the summer months to help children rediscover their natural curiosity. Give them the freedom to explore the things that capture their interest. If you have a child who loves horses, take her the library to borrow books and videos about them. Check into horseback-riding lessons or visit a farm where she can see them up close. If you have a child who’s into LEGOs, allow time for building and exploring. Look for opportunities to capitalize on the educational element of LEGOs without taking over and turning it into school.  Use the blocks as math manipulatives or build simple machines. Use the time to establish a routine. Use the summer months to figure out a good routine for your family so that you’re ready whenever you determine it’s time to introduce formal learning. Does your family function better when you get up and do schoolwork first thing in the morning, or do you prefer a slow start? Do you need to get a few household chores out of the way first or do you prefer to save them until after breakfast? Do any of your children still take naps or could you all benefit from a daily quiet time? Does your family have any unusual schedules to work around, such as a spouse’s work schedule? Take some time during the summer to figure out the best routine for your family, keeping in mind that homeschooling doesn’t have to follow a typical 8-3 school schedule. Use the time to observe your child. Look at the summer months as a time for you to learn rather than teach. Pay attention to what sorts of activities and topics capture your child’s attention. Does he prefer reading or being read to? Is she always humming and moving or is she quiet and still when she’s concentrating? When playing a new game, does he read the directions from cover-to-cover, ask someone else to explain the rules, or want to play the game with  you explaining the steps as you play? If given the option, is she an early riser or a slow starter in the morning? Is he self-motivated or does he need some direction? Does she prefer fiction or non-fiction? Become a student of your student and see if you can pinpoint some of the ways he learns best. This knowledge will help you choose the best curriculum and determine the best homeschooling style for your family. Summer can be a good time for you to explore the possibility of homeschooling—or a great time to begin preparing for a successful start to homeschooling in the fall.

Bird Watching Tips for Beginners

Identifying a bird can be challenging. Birds are active, energetic animals and you need a quick eye to spot as many details as possible in a short span of time. The obstacles are many—the light may be dim, you could have the sun in your eyes, or the bird may dive into a bush. So to stand the best chance of landing a name for a bird, youll want to know what to look for—what matters most and how to spend your precious viewing time. Keep Your Eye on the Bird Photo  © Marc Romanelli / Getty Images. When you spot a bird, dont immediately try to flip through the pages of a field guide to identify it. Every moment of viewing time is precious. Keep your eye fixed on the bird and study it—absorb details of its markings, movements, song, feeding habits, and size. You may want to jot down notes or quickly sketch things that catch your eye. But dont focus too much on your jottings, try to maximize the time you have the bird in view, as this is your time to study it and you dont know how long it will be before the bird dashes off, out of sight. Listen for Calls and Song Listening out for a birds vocalizations is simple but its also easy to forget to do. The odds are, if you dont make a conscious effort to listen, you wont remember the birds song and youll miss out on one of the best bird identification tools there is. The good news is that you can listen to a bird while you look at it—its easy to do both at the same time. Look for bill movements along with the calls you hear, just to ensure youre associating the correct song with the bird youre trying to identify. Estimate General Size and Shape A general picture of the bird, that is its approximate size and shape, will often give you many clues when placing it into the correct family of birds. Therefore, begin with an assessment of the birds overall appearance. What is the approximate size of the bird? Its easiest to estimate size in relation to well know birds. For instance, is the bird youre observing about the size of a sparrow? A robin? A pigeon? A crow? A turkey? Think in terms of silhouettes and try to get an inkling for its general body shape. Does it stand upright and walk with ease, or is it unsteady and awkward on land? Make Note of Facial Markings and Bill Characteristics After determining its general size and shape, then youre ready to start noticing details. Start at the head first. Look for distinctive strips and patches of color including crown stripes, eye lines, nape color, eye arcs or rings. Does it have a black hood on its head? Do its feathers form a crest atop its head? Also note the color and shape of the birds bill. How long is the bill in relation to the birds head? Is it straight or curved, conical or flattened? Look for Wing Bars and Tail Shape Next look for details on the birds body, wings, and tail. Keep an eye out for wing bars, color patches, and markings on the birds body, when it is stationary or in flight. What color is its back and its belly? How long is its tail in relation to the birds body length? How does it hold its tail? Does it have a forked tail or is it square or rounded? Observe Leg Color and Length Now study the birds legs. Does the bird have long legs or short legs? What color are its legs? If you can catch a glimpse of its feet, try and determine if its feet are webbed, or if it has talons. Some birds even have toes that arranged differently than others and if youre fortunate enough to have a close-up view, see how many of its toes point forwards or backwards. Study Movement and Flight Patterns Observe the way the bird walks, how it holds its tail, or how it jumps from branch to branch. If it flies off, watch for a pattern in its flight, does it swoop up and down in gentle arcs with each wingbeat or does it glide gently and steadily? Determine Feeding Habits If you can, try and determine what the bird is eating or how it feeds. Does it cling to a tree t trunk and dig at the bark looking for insects? Or does it forage across your lawn, tilting its head to watch for insects scurrying amongst blades of grass. Does it sway its bill through the water at the edge of a pond? Describe Habitat, Region, and Climate Make note of the habitat in which you have observed the bird. You can do this even after the bird has flown off, so its best to leave this step until last. Did you spot the bird in a wetland or woodland? Are you in an urban setting or a farm field? Each species of bird has a typical region that they inhabit and making note of the region youre in when you observe a bird can narrow the possibilities when you try to identify that bird. Also, birds migrate and species composition in a region changes throughout the seasons, so make note of the time of year (or specific date you observe the bird). Record Your Observations After viewing the bird, jot down your observations for later reference. From markings to behavior, write down anything you noticed, it can all help when you later sit down with a field guide to confirm the birds species. Also, note the location, date, time of day of the siting.

Poverty in Places Such as Africa - 786 Words

There are many different forces that cause poverty in America as well as other places around the world. All countries and or territories have some type of poverty, No one can deny that. Different forces such as bad government policy, overpopulation, high standards of living, costs of living, environmental degradation, and lack of individual responsibility are some of the forces that contribute to poverty. The poor in developing countries are trapped. They lack education, good nutrition, and a safe place to raise their families. They cope with harsh social, economic, and environmental hardships that leave them cold, hungry and sick. Overpopulation can result from high population density. This can lead to environmental degradation. High birth rates contribute to overpopulation in many developing countries. Children are assets to many poor families because they provide labor, usually for farming. Also, the governments of developing countries often provide little or no support, financial or political, for family planning, even people who want to keep their families small have difficulty doing so. Help To Reach Full Potential. One Of Crucet’S Arguments

Help to Reach Full Potential One of Crucet’s arguments in her novel, Make Your Home Among Stranger, states that first generation college students should receive more help than other college students because it will increase their likelihood to pursue graduate from a university and they will have a better future than their family. She discusses the struggles of her main character faces while she attends to school far away from her hometown and her academic struggles. She also conflicts with her self-identity if she has lost her ethnic origin or she is becoming her own identity. I agree with Crucet’s argue that first generation college students should be offered more help in the transition from high school to college school, so they can†¦show more content†¦Molly Bang’s article â€Å"Nine Ways Colleges Should Support Underrepresented Students†, advised â€Å"remind students they are not alone.† If first-generation college students have a sup port system or a mentor, then they are more likely to be comfortable in high school to college transition rather than they feel overwhelmed and stress. However, there is a high chance that they will need financial assistance to pay school, housing, and expenses. I had face financial problems during my first year attending C.S.U.B. (California state university of Bakersfield). I did not have any family members living in Bakersfield, so I did not have the option to live with a family member. Also, I was recruited by the swim team of C.S.U.B. I required to live in the dorms and I did not receive a fund from the swim team; because it was my first year on the swim team. Therefore, I learned independently how to fill in the F.S.F.A. (federal student aid) and it turned out that the grant I received barely covered for tuition, but it did not cover for housing. I had to accept two types of loans, which was subsidized and unsubsidized loans. However, I was still short in paying the full-debt for housing. I would receive notice in my mail from the housing department towards the end of the quarter because the payment was due. My parents did find a way to come up with the money by working longer-hours. I felt guilty that I was attending college and

Sustainable Living Economic Problem

Question: Write about theSustainable Livingfor Economic Problem. Answer: Sustainability refers to the broad means to adapt, which is to try to drastically that is, to readily change from a technology that is less sustainable to a technology that is more sustainable. Sustainable innovations on most occasions depend on the regulations of government and economic problem which are reduced in terms of instability in the country. Due to most changes that occur on the environment it is hard or hard to predict any sustainability that may arise from innovations in the future or long run. The different indicators of sustainability have become useful in different countries to be able to make policies and communicating with the public to pass information about the country and how they can improve their corporate performance in different fields like environment, the economy, the society or even technology improvement. The indicators of sustainability development help to ensure that complex information is communicated to the public. There are different strategies and f rameworks used by the government for sustainable development. (Sachs 2015). According to the study by Cubukcu 2013 , it examines the corporate sustainable development and also its subsequent organizational determinants. The findings from the study found out that factors relating to resources and also other factors related to institutions influence sustainable development in any given country. The media has tried its best to address the issue of sustainable development in the country by highlighting different issues that affect the public. There are different factors that are affected or they go hand in hand with sustainability. These factors involve identification of community, participation of the public in community development and lastly the empowerment of the public in the community development. There are a number of factors to be considered for sustainability development of a given country. One of the factors is of an integrated conservation and be able to develop projects have often stumbled as a result of incorrect way of addressing of these factors. Different innovative approaches need to be incorporated to be able to integrate conservation and sustainability development. There are different approaches to be applied will include the changes necessary to institutions, management and hence decision making strategies to address the different issues to be able to meet the conservation and development objectives. There are fundamental changes and strategies that are necessary to institutions, management and decisio n-making to address sustainability development issues and also to be able to effectively meet conservation and development objectives. Sustainable living on the hand refers to one of the lifestyles in which an individual in the society tries to reduce the usage of either his personal resources or even the natural environment in the ecosystem or the environment. Some of the factors that are addressed in sustainable living are; the use of energy, transportation, consumption and also the diet consumed by the individuals in the society. The aim of sustainable living is when individuals are able to conduct their daily lives in a manner that is in line with sustainability. This can be achieved through the community shifting to energy which is renewable, reusing of materials and diversified transport system. The community living around will only move or shift to the renewable technology in use if the community builds an attractive environment to the culture of the local people and lastly if the environment can be maintained for future generations. (Ergas 2010). According to Lorek 2013 ,one of the ways of sustainable living is the conservation of water by the individuals in the society. It is more important to consider the soil and plants with the available water. There are plants and shrubs that are drought resistant and require less amount of water than the normal trees that are planted in most homes. One of the technology to be applied involve xeriscaping which is a method of selecting the plants which are drought tolerant .The technique can help reduce the usage of water by 50-70 % .The planting of trees on slopes helps reduce the wastage of water by increasing the rate of absorption of water by the plants. Another technology that has been adapted by the public in conservation of water is the adoption of drip irrigation. Drip irrigation helps conserve water by allowing small amounts of water to trickle down the plants. Also there is a layer of organic matter referred to as mulch which helps reduce the amount of water that trickle down to the plants hence allowing for the conservation of water. Other types of technology will involve dish washers which can recycle the amount of water that is used leading to sustainable living in the environment. Another way of sustainable living is the conservation of the energy used in the homes of the community. Energy needs to be conserved for sustainable development in the environment. Most of the homes depend on the green electricity which is generated from water which is harnessed .It is advisable to use different technologies to harness the electricity. One of the methods of harnessing the power will be through solar power. The different technology used to harness electricity will involve the use of photo-voltaic cells organized into panels and concentrated solar power to produce electricity. Solar power helps to conserve energy as the energy got from the sun is unlimited. Other sources of energy that can be applied involve wind energy, geothermal power from steam and many others. Sustainable transport system is another factor that needs to be addressed for sustainable development in the environment. There has been a concern of the increase in price of oil due to inadequacy, increase in climate warming due to carbon emissions and high prices of the energy. There is need for sustainable living in the sustainability of the transport sector. There is need for low cost transportation and sustainable transport system like the use of rail system which in most countries it involves the underground rail system. Countries like Holland are using bicycles as a means of transport system. It is more efficient because it helps reduce congestion, reduce the rate of carbon and noise pollution. Carpooling is also another way of reducing oil consumption and carbon emitted by vehicles on transit (Schaffers2011). Sustainable living will involve the renewal of materials, toxic substances and waste in the environment. As the population increases then it leads to more affluent in the environment. There are different ways of sustainable living concerning the renewal of materials and toxic substances. One of the ways will be to reuse the materials or even recycling the waste. There has been an increase in the level of chemical production which includes herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers which are hazardous to the environment and all the health of the people. There has been also an increase of greenhouse gas emissions, the individuals need to address this issue by using harmless synthetic chemicals and also vigorous testing of the new chemicals which does not affect the environment. Lastly sustainable living will entail the use of sustainable building materials in the environment by the public in the conservation of the environment. It is important to insulate homes because of the energy that is conserved throughout the life in homes. There are different roofing technologies that have been adapted that help in reducing the need for cooling or heating. Another important technology is the usage of energy efficient windows that will help in insulation of the house to conserve the energy (Marckmann2012) .Low e-glass is another method of window insulation. It helps keep the interior of the house warm and cold in respective seasons. Efficient utilization of energy and conservation of water are the key factors in sustainable housing and sustainable living leading to sustainability in the environment. In conclusion sustainable living and development entails people and their relationship with the environment. There is need to conserve the environment because of the value that it brings and it is scarce. For a country to have economic growth and development then it needs to take care of its environment through the scarce resources that are available through better sustainable living by the citizens. Leni Riefenstahl free essay sample

Fatefully, it was this injury that introduced her to mountain films as she came across an advertising poster for Berg des Schicksals (Mountain of Destiny) a mountain film directed by Dr Arnold Fanck on her way to the doctor. Riefenstahl was very intrigued by the film and was so impressed that she returned each night for a week to see Fanck’s Mountain of Destiny. She was â€Å"spell bound† by the â€Å"vivid, lifelike images of majestic mountains† and as she watched, her own â€Å"mountain film destiny† was revealed. The themes of the struggle to survive and natural beauty featured in such mountain films would later appear as a major influence in Riefenstahl’s own work as a director both from the technical and artistic point of view. Only 18 months after the day she became aware of mountain films and her new career, Riefenstahl appeared in her first film directed by Dr Arnold Fanck. Fanck was to become more than her lover and director, he was to become her mentor and one of the main influences on her directorial career which was to be the pinnacle of her success. Working on Fanck’s films as an actress allowed her to learn various aspects of filmmaking such as the roles of the director, cinematographer and technician. Furthermore, Fanck enjoyed experimenting with certain methods using the camera and editing techniques in new and innovative ways. From Riefenstahl’s film career we know that she too was fond of experimenting and may have been inspired by Fanck. As he encouraged her when mentoring â€Å"to avoid the accepted, routine ways of seeing and to find new points of view†. She later experimented with filters, telephoto lenses, tracking as well as underwater filming and slow motion in her coming films highlighting the influence of Fanck who encouraged her experimentation. When editing his films such as Der beilige Berg, Fanck allowed Riefenstahl to assist in the very important process of montage, a technique Fanck used avidly in his films and something Riefenstahl would later also use frequently. As she studied the technique through its inventor Sergei Eisenstein who used montage, lighting and editing in his film, Battleship Potemkin (1925) making him also an important influence. Riefenstahl describes how involved she was in learning about filmmaking with Fanck, stating, â€Å"Day and night, at every free moment, I’m in the printing lab learning to develop and copy. I’m learning editing and how to assemble the many, many short scenes. † If there was any doubt about Fanck’s influence on Riefenstahl as she rose to prominence one does not need to look any further than the first of Fanck’s films Riefenstahl saw, as much of the imagery in Mountain of Destiny is reflected in all of the films throughout Riefenstahl’s career as a director. The wealth of knowledge gained from Fanck was then translated into Riefenstahl’s first film as director, producer, star and writer, Das Blaue Licht (The Blue Light). Her first directorial debut was to be a decisive influence on her career path. While she had, according to Rainer Rother, â€Å"become an interesting phenomenon under [Fanck’s] direction† she was nothing more â€Å"compared with the true stars of silent film†. This all changed when she became the director of The Blue Light in 1932. The film at its completion met international adulation and while reviews were mixed none could fault Riefenstahl on technical mastery. One such review commented that the â€Å"film effects [were] approaching fine paintings† as her work reflected German expressionistic art in her use of shadows reminiscent of other films during her period such as Dr Caligari. As the film opened in Germany and around the world it became obvious that Riefenstahl had achieved overall success, beyond all expectations. In America, specifically New York it was called â€Å"flawless† and â€Å"a highly fascinating fantasy†. The Blue Light was even awarded a silver medal at the first Venice Biennale that year. Riefenstahl still saw herself primarily as an actress, but after her new found success, expected to continue filmmaking as a career. If The Blue Light had not influenced her career path she would not have reached her prominence with her films such as Triumph of the Will and Olympia to come. Riefenstahl did not only gain wider international fame, she also gained the admiration and support of Adolf Hitler. According to Audrey Salkeld, â€Å"Hitler was already an admirer of hers, having been won over by her first dance of fluttering veils in her first movie. From then on, he had followed her career with interest, The Blue Light in particular catching his imagination. † Indeed the success of The Blue Light was one of the determining influences on Riefenstahl’s rise to prominence as she states, â€Å"This film was pivotal in my life, not so much because it was my first successful effort as a producer and director, but because Hitler was so fascinated by this film that he insisted I make a documentary about the Party rally in Nuremberg. The result was Triumph of the Will. † To further reiterate the importance and influence of The Blue Light on Riefenstahl an image of her as Junta took pride of place on her bedroom wall until she died in 2003. Being an avid admirer of Riefenstahl, when Hitler received a letter from her asking to meet, he accepted without hesitation. During this meeting Hitler allegedly stated â€Å"you must make my films†. This later materialised into Riefenstahl directing Victory of the Faith (1934) and then Triumph of the Will (1935), which won many awards and critical acclaim all over the world, later being called â€Å"a masterpiece of romanticized propaganda†. From Triumph of the Will’s success Riefenstahl went on to film Olympia which was another all round success. It is important to note that Hitler’s rise to prominence parallels Riefenstahl as he did influence her acceptance of filming Triumph of the Will as she initially refused, Triumph of the will ultimately becoming her most prominent film. Despite criticisms after the war, Riefenstahl is still classified â€Å"as the greatest female filmmaker of the 20th century† in accordance with the success of her films primarily Triumph of the Will. Riefenstahl’s cinematic talents may not have been realised if The Blue Light had not initially been a success leading onto the pinnacle of her prominence, Triumph of the Will and Olympia. ) â€Å"The significance of a personality depends on the impact he/she had on the period in which he/she lived How accurate is this statement in relation to the personality you have studied? Leni Riefenstahl is primarily significant due to directing the most â€Å"imposing propaganda films in support of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party†. D uring the period when she was most successful as a director, Riefenstahl would argue she had little impact on the mindset of her fellow German’s, stating that already 90% were in favour of Hitler before the release of her films deemed propaganda. It is only after World War II that people saw her role as significant in perpetuating Nazi ideals. A news item in the press when she travelled to American stated â€Å"There is no place in Hollywood for Leni Riefenstahl† in reference to her Nazi association. Leni Riefenstahl led a long and illustrious career under the Nazi regime, despite its sexist nature, establishing international acclaim and pioneering technical advances in lighting, creative editing and camera movement. This however is only a small section of what contributed to her significance, as her achievements as a director were overshadowed by her relationship with the Third Reich. Until her death Leni Riefenstahl defended her naivety to the Third Reich’s activities, however she could never escape the controversy even in death. The controversy surrounding her â€Å"is what people will remember about her† according to Irene Runge. However Jurgen Trimborn refutes this saying that She may have been an unscrupulous careerist, but she was also a brilliant artist. History will forgive her,† and her talent will be remembered. Both opposing views agree that the significance of a person is not only based on the impact they had on the period in which they lived, as it is also their lasting impact, their legacy that gives them their significance. In 1932 Leni Riefenstahl heard rising political figure, Adolf Hitler speak at a Nazi Party rally at Sportsplatz. Immediately she was taken in by his charisma describing the overwhelming event as â€Å"an almost apocalyptic vision [that she] was never able to forget†. Acting out of â€Å"inner-compulsion† Riefenstahl decided to write to Hitler asking to meet and in May 1932, they did. This single act would lead to her greatest success and her ultimate demise. As Hitler was an eager follower of Riefenstahl’s, he insisted that when his party came to power she would produce films for him. True to his word, Adolf Hitler provided Riefenstahl with an unlimited budget to film the annual Nazi Party rally at Nuremberg in 1934. This produced what is deemed â€Å"the greatest propaganda film ever made†; Triumph of the Will. Art as a popular consciousness must be â€Å"usurped for the transmission of whatever ideology is being promoted. Art in other words, is perceived as a form of power especially through film. † The power Riefenstahl had in Germany during the Nazi regime was increased due to Hitler’s totalitarian government; therefore her impact was intensely scrutinized when the nature of Hitler’s government was revealed. Triumph of the Will was to have a major impact on perpetuating the ‘Fuhrer Myth’ that Hitler’s totalitarian regime realised was important in maintain power under any circumstances. As is supported by Jessica Evans who states that Triumph of the Will was â€Å"an inestimable propaganda tool in building the myth of Hitler-as-savior†. From the opening scenes of Triumph of the Will Hitler is portrayed as an almighty being descending from the clouds and mist to earth, the saviour of his people in their time of need. Through Riefenstahl’s clever use of extended aerial shots of the old city of Nuremberg and the small storm troopers below the audience is reminded of the past historical heritage of the area and the fact that the glory of the past will repeat itself in Hitler who descends from the clouds. During the film Hitler is always elevated, however Riefenstahl uses telephoto lenses for close-up shots of Hitler and then to a soldier or worker in the crowed to symbolise the peoples intimate connection with their Fuhrer. It is the portrayal of Hitler in her film that has caused the most publicity despite the fact the film was recognized as a masterful, epic and innovative work of filmmaking, winning many awards such as the gold medal in Venice in 1935 and at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937, surpassing all of her previous films; Victory of Faith and The Blue Light. However that which â€Å"sealed her reputation as the greatest female filmmaker of the 20th century,† also destroyed her career at the end of World War II as she was condemned as a Nazi support and the Triumph of the Will was fated to fall from its status as art to mere Nazi propaganda. She was heralded before the advent of the War, but after she was condemned. Famous Hollywood director, Frank Capra states that while Triumph of the Will â€Å"fired no gun, dropped no bombs. †It was used as a psychological weapon, capable of destroying â€Å"the will to resist, it was just as fatal. The storm surrounding Riefenstahl’s controversial relationship with the Nazi party is considered by Robert Sklar, an American historian as â€Å"the most significant controversy in the hundred year history of cinema: the question of a filmmakers responsibility for the crimes committed in the name of political ideologies their work has glorified. † Highlighting her controversial significance today as we grapple with our development in the way we look at the past. Leni Riefenstahl’s significance is emphasised in the film Triumph of the Will. Disregarding the controversy that followed it after World War II and the fact it was commissioned by Hitler, would it have been enough to give Riefenstahl the status of a significant figure? It would most likely not have. The controversy however, forced everyone to re-evaluate the film as propaganda and to look more closely at Riefenstahl’s ulterior motives having had a relationship with a man deemed in history as ‘evil’. This is what propelled Riefenstahl into the realm of a significant figure in history. The infamous reputation she gained from moving among the Nazi hierarchy has remained a heated topic of debate till this day and despites her unrelenting refusal of her impact; it has still contributed to her significance. The allied forces certainly thought she had a drastic impact on her period through the Nazi Party; otherwise they would not have imprisoned her and put her on trial. Even after she was acquitted she still carried the stigma of her association as a Nazi sympathiser, fame born through infamy. After World War II Leni Riefenstahl never produced another film, however she maintained an artistic outlet in the photography of the Nuba and aquatic life. Despite her best attempts to put the past behind her, her work after World War II has even been criticised as representing fascist ideals such as the beauty of human physicality and survival of the fittest. This controversy combined with her career as a successful filmmaker has given Leni Riefenstahl her significance. Riefenstahl reveals that â€Å"I have lived many lives† that have combined great fame and great disgrace, the combination of these lives has ensured her enduring significance. While Triumph of the Will perpetuated her significance due to its controversy and Riefenstahl’s applied technical genius, her pioneering in filmmaking during a time where Kinder, Kirche und Kuche (Children, Church and Cooking) was all that was expected of women is also a reason why she is significant. Women in Germany during the Nazi regime were forced to stay home, many women in prominent positions as doctors, civil servants, lawyers and teachers were sacked. By 1939 there were only a few left in professional jobs. In a society dominated by sexism Riefenstahl was able to maintain and even improve her position in society adding to her significance. The Nazi party also frowned upon women wearing make- up and trousers as well as not tying up hair into a bun or plaits. All of which Riefenstahl did not abide by, being photographed numerously even with Hitler without adhering to these regulations. Riefenstahl thrived in the sexist environment while the majority of women did not, creating technical masterpieces under the fascist government. As a woman in a predominantly male position, not to mention being in a sexist society she is seen as an inspiration in that aspect by modern day women due to the fact that â€Å"In 2011, women comprised [only] 18% of all directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers, and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films†. The impact she had on her period must have been significant as her position could not be ignored, even Goebbels’s was feeling threatened as â€Å"he had difficulty accepting that a woman could excel in this field†. Furthermore women of that period who were once in powerful positions themselves must have seen her as an idol. Olympia (1938) and Triumph of the Will (1935) as well as The Blue Light (1932) highlighted her technical ability despite being in a male oriented profession and in a fascist state that saw women as nothing more than child bearers. The Blue Light was Riefenstahl’s directorial debut and highlights many of her pioneering ambitions through her use of different camera angles, lighting and creative editing. To set the scene for her mystical fairytale she experimented with techniques involving various colour filters and a special type of film for the camera. This allowed her to film scene set at night during the day using different shades of grey and black. To achieve the mood and images she wanted, she simply adjusted the filters. Before her pioneering of this technique, night scenes could only be filmed under bright lights which ruined any other effects the director was hoping to achieve. From her first film she made a significant impact on the international cinematic world winning awards such as a silver medal at the first Venice Biennale. One of the many adulating reviews stated that it was â€Å"beautiful in the extreme† and signalled the start of future triumphs. The mystical setting of the clouds and mist of the opening scenes of Triumph of the Will were achieved by using the same techniques as in The Blue Light with filters and lighting playing an important role. In the making of Triumph of the Will she approached the method of filming very differently to other films of that period that â€Å"were static productions, with the camera in one position simply recording the action. † She understood that it was important to move the cameras and the action. To achieve the movement of her cameras to achieve different angles a small lift was built on one of the swastika flag poles so the camera could give an expanding panorama of the rally unfolding below. Riefenstahl also constructed rail tracks in certain sections of the stadium as well as special filming stands and cranes to achievement moving camera shots. To take away the monotony of Hitler’s political speeches she dug around his speaking platform for a circular track allowing the camera to move around him as he spoke. These innovative techniques that she pioneered and her philosophy of movement contributed to her significance as a whole. The use of tracking was also used in her following film Olympia â€Å"regarded by many as one of the greatest documentary films ever made and a magnificent work of cinematography. † In filming Olympia Riefenstahl due to past success in experimenting used a multitude of new techniques and effects. Riefenstahl in order to capture the long jumpers and pole-vultures with the backdrop of the sky insisted on having a series of pits dug in the stadium. Telephoto lens that she had used in Triumph of the Will to capture intimate moments between Hitler and his people were also used in Olympia. This gave an intense close-up of the runner’s face to capture the emotion and deep focus awaiting the start of the race. A catapult was also created to allow the camera to move with the runners along the racetrack. The scene dedicated to diving is one of the most famous scenes purely for the inventive techniques and effects. The grace accompanying the sport of diving was capture by using cameras with three different speeds and the first underwater camera of its type was used to take the audience beneath the surface. Brief segments of the diving in reverse were also used to capture the artistic beauty. Olympia is also along with Triumph of the Will considered one of her most successful films winning a gold medal in Paris, the award for best film in the world in Venice, the Olympic award by the IOC and when the controversy had died slightly in 1956 was classed as one of the world’s best ten films. The winning of these awards surely highlights the impact she had on the cinematic world during her period of great success and afterwards. Riefenstahl has even now had a large impact on the cinematic world as techniques such as underwater filming, tracking and montage are still used today to filming sporting events such as the Olympics.

War Tactics of the Mongols Essay Example

War Tactics of the Mongols Essay A brute, a cannibal, a hooligan, a monster, a rascal, and a barbarian all describe a savage person in a primitive state or a person without culture, refinement or education. Barbarians have always been seen as uncivilized, wild, savage, crude, and uneducated. So is it just to describe the Mongols as such? The answer is no. The Mongols were not barbaric. As the documents discussed in this essay demonstrate, they had highly sophisticated military tactics; they lived by a code of conduct, and actually helped improved life for a conquered people. The Mongols grouped their warriors in armies of 10,000. These in turn were organized into 1,000-man brigades, 100-man companies, and 10-man squads. Their strategy was to attack the enemy head-on and far right left to surround them. The Mongols could be outnumbered, but they brought women and children on horses so it would appear they had many more soldiers. They positioned themselves to surround the fortress so that no one can enter of leave. They divided their up their forces and take turns fighting so they did not get too tired. John of Plano Carpini, the person who saw them fight, most likely did not see all of the Mongol’s war strategies or he might have not have described it in the exact way. He could have left out a valuable note to winnings of the entire Mongol’s battle. With their warmongering maneuvers, they killed over 6 million people. These are reported deaths from varied sources. That is like slaughtering everyone in Chicago twice. They conquered 4,860,000 square miles of land, more than the United States. They controlled more land in 40 years than any â€Å"non-barbarians†. To achieve such feats the Mongols had to be educated to gain an empire larger than the United States. (Documents 1-4) Barbarians have no code of conduct. They could not care less what happened to there conquered people. The Mongols did care have each other behaved. There were two codes of conduct that guided Mongol life. On of these was the yasa, usually referred to as the Mongol law. The second was the bilik, which was a set of rules to live by. Both codes had rules on hospitality, drinking, and adultery. The codes taught them to share, that adultery could be punished my death and that too much drinking is a punishable offense. The Mongol rulers wanted to root out all adultery and theft and kept severe laws against theft. Scenes have been recorded of Mongol soldiers burying Persian prisoners not just leaving their bodies out to decompose. Barbarians would not care about how they treated other people, but the Mongols were taught to show considerable respect to each other. The Mongols believed in one god and tolerated the religion of others. All Mongols did not live by these codes and did what ever they wanted. Document 5, 7, 9, 10) The Mongols conquered control of the continental caravan routes from China to Persia. The Mongol Empire made significant contributions to economic development. They promoted diversified economic development by taking up residence among their new subjects. In both China and Persia, agriculture and craft production flourished because the leaders were patrons o f art. The Mongol emperors built canals to improve transportation and communication. When one of the Great Khan’s messengers set out, they used the system of post-horses. Every 25 miles a messenger arrived at post to rest and trade horses. It is sort of, like when a trucker stops in a small town to refuel and rest before hitting the road again. Marco Polo most likely never used the Yams to travel and did not how difficult to was to ride an unfamiliar horse, to keep the message uncompromised, and to stay safe from attackers through the route. If the Mongols were barbaric, they would care about helping China and Persia flourish their economy and would not be such fans of art. Of course, the documents did tell of how the Mongols weakened the economy of conquered people. Documents 6 8) None of the documents discusses the opinions of the Mongols from a citizen of a conquered nation. That would tell whether they thought their new leaders were just or cruel. Also, while the documents provide examples of the Mongol’s military tactics they do not mention the life of an average Mongol compared to any other soldier who is apart of an army that is conside r known barbaric to compare behaviors and daily;iug;iug;i routines. Memoirs or a diary demonstrating a Mongol leader’s opinion on whether or not his people are barbarians would have been useful to get his idea of his empire that they rule.

nano-technology essays

nano-technology essays One of the big problems not fully appreciated with current ideas in nano technology research is the energy requirement for the development of shuttles and using it to carry the bots to other planets. First of all, the design of the shuttle would have to be very intricate because it would have to be able to manage to intense cold since it has to travel farther and farther away from the sun. And as for the probes that are going to build a base for colonization, it requires a new type of energy unlike solar power because as it travels farther, there would not be enough solar energy to make the bots function. Battery-charged energy would also fail because the probes are designed to stay on the planet long enough to build the base. A new type of energy that the group created is some type of regenerative energy that is built inside the probes. This allows the probes the period of time to build the base. Another requirement or idea that is needed for our invention that is not present in the world today is some sort of advanced satellite transmission. Since the probes have to travel very far, it has to be able to transmit information that is collected from its exploration on the planets. The present technology does not allow satellite transmission, for example, in Pluto. That is the reason why we need new and improved satellites. Another method is to place better satellites that are able to withstand extreme weather changes, between the planets in intervals. For example, we would position a satellite at Saturn and one near the Earth. The probe would be able to send information from Pluto to the satellite near Saturn. Then the satellite would transmit the info to the satellite located near Earth. ...

Christopher Columbus- The Discovery (1992) Movie Review

Christopher Columbus- The Discovery (1992) - Movie Review Example Christopher Columbus proposed to the then king of Portugal John the Second in 1485 that he financially supports him in his voyage to the Atlantic in order for him to discover new lands. Christopher Columbus had been searching for financial support from various nations but in vain. The main reason why he lacked support was due to the fact that the Roman Catholic Church was against his voyages. This was a hardship for Christopher Columbus since the Roman Catholic had a lot of influence hence them being against him meant financial support from rulers would be difficult. The king John the second’s advisors rejected Columbus’ proposal. However, the Roman Catholic gave Columbus 12,000 Maravedis as an annual allowance in their effort to ensure that if Columbus made any discoveries then there was a possibility of the church claiming their rights on the lands. It was not until 1492 that Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand agreed to sponsor Christopher Columbus in his voyage though they did this partly together with Italian investors (Brigham 24). In the agreement, Columbus was to be named Admiral of the ocean, and in all the lands that he discovered he was to be named the governor and viceroy of all these lands. Plot and Theme The film is about Christopher Columbus who is a navigator from Genoa with a dream to make sure he finds another route to West Indies since the route that is being used is particularly long hence very costly. The route in which he desires to discover is believed to be short involving sailing towards the west rather than east through the ocean. Christopher Columbus tries to get backing from the Portuguese king who rejects his proposal. He then turns to the king and queen of Spain Isabella and Ferdinand. Christopher Columbus faces a hard time convincing the man who is King Ferdinand’s lead advisor. However, Christopher Columbus is able to convince the king to fund him in his expedition after seducing the queen who helps in convinci ng her husband. Christopher Columbus is given command of three ships with a crew composed of mainly thieves and murderers who are the only people who can agree to undertake such a journey since it was dimmed to be dangerous and impossible. Christopher Columbus also faces a lot of opposition from the church especially from the priest who accuses him of going against God’s wishes because he advises Columbus not to go hence that is God’s Wish. In the film, Christopher Columbus faces a lot of challenges the church being the major problem. This is because, the church has a lot of influence hence what it directs is followed by everyone. Christopher Columbus decision to continue in his quest of finding an alternative route to the West Indies attracts a lot of hostility from both the church and other government officials hence his problem in getting the necessary finance needed to undertake the journey. Christopher Columbus also faces problems in his navigation of waters which are new to him. His ships are almost sunk by storms, and he even loses members of his crew. Christopher also faces a lot of hardship in controlling and maintaining discipline among his crew members who are mostly thieves and murderers. For instance, while at sea a mutiny takes place as a result of some men feeling that they are lost and Christopher Columbus will only lead them to their destruction. Columbus is also being spied on by Portugal which sends a spy to pose as one of
